7 Historic Phoenix Businesses That Are Still Open Today

It's not often that you will hear anything in Phoenix described as historic. Indeed, cities such as Boston and New York had been around for over a century by the time Phoenix was officially incorporated in 1868.

However, that's not to say we don't have our fair share of history! Here is a list of 7 Phoenix-area businesses that have withstood the test of time and are still going strong today.

7) Desert Schools Credit Union
Since 1939 - 72 Years

This is one local business with some deep roots. Desert Schools Credit Union offers over 50 branch locations to its 370,000 members. The credit union controls around $3 billion in assets today.

6) Hotel San Carlos
Since 1928 - 83 Years

This hotel in Downtown Phoenix has been open since before the Great Depression. Today, they offer 138 guest rooms with all modern amenities. The hotel is also famous for their Ghost Tours which run from October through December.

5) MacAlpine's Soda Fountain and Diner
Since 1928 - 83 Years

This old-school soda shop has been serving up burgers, sandwiches, ice cream, and of course, sodas of all flavors and colors for over eight decades. Check them out on 7th Street between Thomas and McDowell Roads.

4) Arizona Biltmore Hotel
Since 1929 - 82 Years

Like a fine wine, the Arizona Biltmore has only gotten better with age. This luxury resort and spa offers 740 guest rooms and four-diamond service as certified by AAA. Every US President since Herbert Hoover has stayed here.

3) Rock Springs Cafe
Since 1918 - 93 Years

Located in Black Canyon City about 50 miles north of Phoenix, the Rock Springs Cafe is known for its world-famous selection of homemade pies. Over 20 types of pies are available, baked fresh daily. The cafe also offers a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu.

2) Monti's La Casa Vieja
Since 1890 - 121 years

Since 1881 - 130 years

The Holsum Bakery was up and running for 31 years before Arizona officially became a state. Founded in 1881 by German immigrant Edward Eisele, Holsum has grown to become one of the largest and most successful bakeries in the Southwestern US.
