North Phoenix Blog Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary

This month, we at the North Phoenix Blog are celebrating our second anniversary! For the past two years, we have tried to provide our readers with informative and interesting articles as well as original photography.

There were a couple of reasons why North Phoenix Blog was started. The first reason is that I wanted a way to improve my writing skills. They say that the key to great writing is to write about what you know, so the natural choice was to write about where I was born and raised.

The second reason was because I feel that there is not enough GOOD news out there in the world. Take a look at the AllTop headlines on the left-hand side of the page. Every day the major news outlets including the Arizona Republic, the Phoenix New Times, and the local news stations bombard us with heaps of bad news.

We have 24-hour, up-to-the-minute, late-breaking coverage of violent crimes and all manner of tragedies. We have an endless stream of talking heads ready to supply us with commentary and opinion regarding today's hottest issues. There is no shortage of mud to be slung. Watching this type of news every day is very depressing!

While it's important to stay up to date with current events, I criticize the local news for sensationalizing a great number of their stories. In all honesty, a warehouse fire in Lower Buckeye or a car theft in Mesa is of little concern to me, 40 miles away. All too often, the everyday events of a city of millions of people are magnified into fantastic stories that are ultimately irrelevant to most of us.

What I would like is a news source that reports on things happening near me. Unfortunately, North Phoenix is not on anybody's radar. So rather than whining, I decided to do something about it.

I started a website that focuses on the GOOD news that happens in the city. During the past two years, the North Phoenix Blog has covered the openings of the new Agave Library, the revamped Wet-N-Wild water park, the Musical Instrument Museum, and the seven-story Drury Inn and Suites.

We've taken you to such fine attractions as the Deer Valley Rock Art Center and the Penske Racing Museum. We've covered events such as car shows and the art walk and written reviews of local restaurants such as Culver's Deer Valley and In-N-Out Burger.

We've also explored our history with posts about growing up in Phoenix and fun things to do in Phoenix. Don't forget our community-oriented posts such as our guide to recycling in Phoenix! All the while, we strive for quality in everything we do.

We hope that you enjoy reading the North Phoenix Blog as much as we enjoy writing it! While our niche is still small, we are always looking for ways to broaden our horizons and reach out to more people.

As we near the 100 post count, I'd like to thank you for reading the North Phoenix Blog. We look forward to bringing you many more great articles and photos in the future.

Thanks,
Editor

  2. Congrats on your achievement! 100% agree that mainstream media focuses on crimes and bad news. I suspect that's because it's easy, but reporting good news like you do is time consuming and takes actual thought & work. Thanks for keeping it up.
