City-Data Offers More Than Just Facts

Sep 11, 2008

In a recent post, I had mentioned the website City-Data as a good resource for facts and figures on Phoenix. However, I forgot to mention one of the best things about City-Data: their excellent forums.

Between anonymous cowards posting racist remarks on the Craigslist forums and the armchair politicians debating our resident hero/villain Sheriff Joe Arpaio on AZcentral, it would seem that valley residents have found plenty of local forums to post their thoughts on. However, there are several reasons why I keep coming back to the Phoenix forum on City-Data instead of those other sites.

Battle of the Banks

Sep 7, 2008

In the peaceful desert landscape near Deer Valley Airport, a storm cloud has been brewing for the last two years. The air has grown heavy with anticipation as 9 different opponents prepare to do battle. They have chosen North Phoenix as the arena, and it's going to be one heck of a fight.

Okay, so maybe it's not a fight in the traditional sense with guns and soldiers. But the competition for your business will be fierce with 9 new banks opening along a two-mile stretch of road. That's right; nine different banks have locations staked out along 19th Avenue between Deer Valley Road and Happy Valley Road. All of them are brand new locations constructed within the past two years. Let's take a look at the contenders:

Drive Safe During Storm Season

Sep 3, 2008

Whether you're a Phoenix transplant or a lifetime resident, you've probably heard of our famous Monsoon storms. Monsoon is a word which means "change in wind" or change in direction. In casual conversation the word refers to the short, violent storms that descend on Phoenix during July and August.

Monsoon storms typically have strong winds, blowing dust, and fast-moving clouds that dispense hard, driving rain. These are extremely dangerous weather conditions for drivers! If you get caught in a monsoon storm while driving around, just remember these simple tips to stay safe.

The Skinny on North Phoenix

Aug 17, 2008

If you've ever moved or thought about moving, you've probably worried about moving into a "bad neighborhood." A term that broad can mean all things to all people, and I try to avoid such generalities when telling Phoenix transplants about other parts of the valley. What does it really mean when a someone says that it's a "great neighborhood?" What does it mean when locals tell you to avoid a specific neighborhood?

Map of PhoenixMost importantly, what does it mean to you? Are you looking for a low crime rate, highly rated schools, or are you fearful of a large or diverse immigrant population? Are you expecting to run into a certain stereotyped person? Rather than speculation and personal judgments, I look for the facts. Numbers don't lie, which is why Zipskinny is such a neat tool.

In Good Health With John C. Lincoln

Aug 9, 2008

From emergency care to long-term illness, a quality hospital is at the heart of every strong community. Fortunately for residents in the Deer Valley area, they have the John C. Lincoln Health Network on their side.

John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, ArizonaLocated at 27th Avenue and Beardsley Road, John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital is easily accessible from both Interstate 17 and the Loop 101 Freeway. A new health center in Anthem and the hospital on Central and Dunlap are also part of the JCL network.

John C. Lincoln's 174-bed hospital in North Phoenix is a small operation compared to valley giant Banner Health, which has a 397-bed hospital in Glendale and has locations in six other states.
