You Grew Up In The 80s In Phoenix If You...The other day I came across a list of Phoenix history that's making its way around the Internet on sites like FaceBook and a bunch of blogs. If you grew up in Phoenix in the 1980s (like I did), you will remember a lot of these!

Watching the lightning storms during Monsoon season up in South Mountain.
Paddle boats at Encanto park.

When Gary Tyson and family were on a murder rampage and how relieved everyone was when he was found dead in the desert just a few yards from a water source. Karma sucks sometimes doesn't it Gary?!???

I lived in Tempe from about 1976-1982 or so and have this photo of playing Goofy Golf someplace in that area with a big red dinosaur holding a white bone like a cane and a Fred flintstone cutout thing next to it. Any idea where that was anyone? My mom thinks it was 1980 and for some reason it's making me crazy not being able to figure it out! I live in Tucson now and wanted to check it out. Any help would be cool. I wasn't sure how to attach the photo to this page so it's not available.

I grew up in this area too. A little east of 32nd street though. I grew up living around several apartments and homes between 40th street to 48th street and between Roosevelt to roughly Palm Lane. So I remember Skate World on 45th street and Oak, Thomas Mall (McCrory's retail store and the dollar theater there on Thomas and 45th street). Tower Plaza (the ice rink there & the arcade inside), Tower Records on 40th street and Thomas. Evan's Supermarket on 44th & McDowell, Thrifty's Drug in the same location. Winchell's Donuts right next to Seven-Eleven on 48th street and McDowell, Bob's Big Boy (my mom worked as a waitress there) on 46th street and Thomas. Carrow's restaraunt (Now Garcia's on 46th st. & Thomas). Pic N Save on Thomas and 32nd street. The 202 freeway wasn't built yet and all those homes where the 202 & the 143 meet were all still in tact. The old Greyhound Dog Track was still operating. Park and Swap, just north of the Dog track was the original vender spot where they literally had to pitch a tent each and every workday (I worked there so I'd know). Alcapulco Bay Beach Club restaurant in Tower Plaza (my mom also waitressed there too). So many more I could probably think of in this area.

I had a red card too. Funny story, the card actually got me out of a crazy police stop once. I was driving to work on midnight shift to the shady area Inwork in around Mohave and 3rd street. But before I got there I was on the I-10/I-17 interchange (the one by the airport, not "the stack"), and I picked up a hitchhiker on the freeway for some strange reason. Well apparently there was a cop killer on the loose in that area and my vehicle fit the dude's description because about 20 squad cars and a helicopter tracked and stopped me right after I picked the hitchhiker up on the freeway. They came in full assault and got me on the ground with police lights everywhere. They started searching me and my belongings in my wallet and found that red card. I vividly remember one of the cops saying "ah he's good, he's a red card holder" lmao. They let me go after that. Probably not because of the red card lol, but I'm sure it didn't hurt.

The old man that works at the new pizza place actually used to work at pizza de more. He said the owner would not share his recipe, even with his kids. I would also do anything for a slice of that pizza.

Arizona natives born and raised who remember when their state hadn't been ruined by Californian's yet and because of the overpopulation, were forced to eventually move. It was nice while it lasted. 1975-2005.

Worst sports fans ever. Didn't want the Diamondbacks because we lost the Firebirds. Didn't want the Coyotes because we lost the Roadrunners. (Tucson doesn't count). The Cardinals were ALWAYS the laughing stock of the NFL and did not deserve their new stadium because they could not even sell-out Sun Devil Stadium. The Suns only sold-out when they were hot. Anyone who remembers the '93 season would know just fake the fans were. The Devils are the only thing left in the Valley that counts.

GO DEVILS.

This is wild, I recognize most of these. The worst part was how many cassette tapes I lost by leaving them on the dash board in high school in the late 80's, they would melt.

And I remember when I-10 didn't connect through in town, and before there was a "stack," or 101, 202, 303 or even 51 highways. Oh, and the 60 was called the "Superstition Freeway," even on the big green sign when you entered it.

Preston's was my favorite. I remember coming back to town after graduating from Uni out of state and frantically looking for a dance club catering to the same clientele as those you listed. All I could find was something way on the west side. As my luck would have it, Preston's opened up right around the corner from my parents house. (I boomeranged and lived back with my parents after college). I remember many nights sneaking out even during the week to get my drink and dance on in hopes of meeting the boy of my dreams.... for that night at least

This is driving me nuts and nobody can remember the name of that music group in the 80’s that was comprised of teens and they sang and danced at different events. It was like the boy band Menudo but it had girls also. We would see them at the state fair or other local festivities and athletic events . I think they also traveled a bit and were always featured on local news and radio stations . Any idea? I can picture seeing them perform and this one kid I went to middle with was in it . This is driving me nuts .

For another option of tubing rather than the Salt River a bunch of us used to take our tubes to the Flumes way out in the desert. No one was supposed to go in that waterway. There was posted signs and all stating to stay away. Not sure what they really were but some kind of above the ground half tube transport of water from one place to another with the top half of it open except for some rails across the top all the way so it was awful easy for crazy teens with innertubes to get into if they knew where it was located. The guys would drive us there and at a certain point would know when to get their tubes ahead of the pack then reach above to the railing overhead and pull themselves and their tubes out then stay there & make sure that us girls got out safely also and drag us out if we couldn't swing back up safely. That was because there was a dangerous drop off at a certain point down the line with some kind of a grating that then sucked the water down underneath ground. I can't believe what I used to do when I was a teen.

I remember:

MetroCentre
Bobby McGees restaurant and bar - still got the little match books
Zazoo Nightclub - still got the match books
Rusty Pelican Bar
Lunt Avenue Marble Club
Denny's

Stayed at the Biltmore Club Apartments

Everything else is a blur, considering the alcohol consumed over a period of a month each time.

To the girl who mentioned Smittys, I remember Smitty's had the best vanilla and chocolate swirl cones ever on 35th Ave & Peoria.
In that same area was the original and still standing Garcias!!!
Anyone remember when Thunderbird was a dirt road and Bell Rd.'s pavement ended at Turf Paradise and pick back up around Cavecreek Rd. The Wagon Yard was the main feature on Bell and CaveCreek at the time ansbthere where a bunch of bars in the area that were country.
If you drove south on Cave Creek it was like club alley. I lives it because the variety of music qas just fabulous. You go from country to rock, Bid Band, Elvis impersonators(believe it or not).
Mr. Lucky's was the place to go if you were a minor because they were terrible at carding people.
You could go to a bar all night as long as your parent was present.
You could buy a pack of cigarettes for your parents as long as you have a signed note from one of your parents.
You could only drive around Metro Center 3 times only. After that it would be considered cruising and you could get in trouble. We also still have a lot of icons here in Phoenix restaurants stores that have been here forever and thank you all for the reminders

Here is a long shot: How about Peter Bob's Watering Hole on Cave Creek Road in N Phoenix? Used to have a band 'Stretch N the Truth' there on weekends with a red haired female singer (Robin - I believe). Place was packed. This would have been early to mid 80's. Thanks.

Gary K said...

On the Peter Piper comment: Used to be at 35th Ave/Dunlap (Los Compadres Apts) which was a nice place and area back then. Sounds like it is a war zone now. If I recall, wasnt there a Smitty's at 35th Ave / Peoria? Thanks

Anonymous said...

There was, indeed, a Smitty's across the street at 35th Ave. and Peoria (southwest corner) and the small Peter Piper was in the Lucky-Skaggs shopping center (northwest corner). It was on the end of the shopping center, tucked behind a United Bank building. Before the Peter Piper there was a Peter Piper, it was briefly Waldo Pepper's Pizza... and before that,it was a Straw Hat Pizza. You're right about the neighborhood now, though - nothing like what it used to be. Such a shame that so many once-nice parts of Phoenix are now dumpy.

Valley West Mall (before it was Manistee) had a nightclub, but I can't remember its name. It also had a Mongomery Ward's.

After the Gold Rush in Tempe was a great multi-level place located in the old Dooley's.

Most nightclubs let you in if you were ugly, but you still needed a shirt with a collar.

Everybody wore skin-tight pants in the first part of the 80's but parachute pants later.

Mel's diner was. Based off of a diner on McDowell and approx 19th Ave or maybe closer to 15th Ave but it was called Al's Diner I believe, but that place was still open 20 years ago and I took my family there back then and it was falling apart in everyway sadly. I ordered a apple juice for my two year old son and my baby drank it and started acting drunk and sure as shit that apple juice was completely fermented. Ya. So that's my story on going to the Mel's diner place. Also I totally was pissed yes and had a few choice words for them serving my baby alcohol but none the less he only had a few drinks of it, thank God, he fell asleep and woke up and back to sleep, poor baby, but he was fine. No permanent damage done to his little brain or body. Today he is healthy, smart as an encyclopedia and in the Navy. Also he never did drink in highschool or even when he turned 21 he is straight no alcohol no drugs no cigarettes. Loves apple juice.

I also worked at Peter Piper, the one on the east side of Metro, before they moved over by Best Buy on the west. That was a fun time working the play room!
